The history Boskop Yacht Club starts way back in 1959 when the construction of the dam was completed. Boskop Yacht Club is a family orientated sailing club with a proud history spanning over more than 50 years. The membership consists of approximately 80 families. The dam is fed by the Mooi River and the Klerkskraal Dam and is situated among a series of low lying hills about 13 km North of Potchefstroom.
The dam forms the southern border of the 3 000ha Boskop Dam Nature Reserve. Here 370ha of crystal clear water harbours 250 species of bird, including the fish eagle, and is the source of Potchefstroom’s drinking water.
The Club is open to visitors who want to explore sailing as a sport. We offer sail training to beginners and advanced sailors from a very young age to the not so young. You are never too young or too old to master the art of sailing. We have sailing weekends twice a month (as indicated on the sailing calendar) and on these weekends training sessions take place on Saturday from 10h00. Club seniors help to get the younger generation on the water and are always available for advice and tutoring. We have club boats available such as Lasers, Gypsies and Optimists that are used for sail training and which are also available to be used by all aspiring sailors during club races. We strive to promote sailing.
Club racing only starts after 14h00 on a Saturday and never before 09h00 on a Sunday. The wind dictates how many races will be sailed and it is usually about five on an average sailing weekend. The racing fleet usually consists of dinghies and multi hull boats. Our winds vary a lot depending on the season.
BYC is at the forefront of the Department of Transport’s drive for a new Inland Water Safety Programme. As such the Club is part of the gatekeeper’s committee on dam monitoring activities and safety on the water. The only power boats allowed on the water are those to be used for bridgework, buoy laying and rescuing.
We have extensive lawns and shady trees with caravan sites, bungalows and camping is welcomed. We have a fenced-in swimming pool in front of the club house. The club house has a tea lounge, pool table, table tennis table and a licensed bar. Galley services are available for regattas and championships, but otherwise can be used by members and visitors. There are braai facilities in front of the club house with enough chairs and tables available to use by everyone. We have well equipped and neat ablution facilities.
Visitors must call or e-mail well in advance to make an appointment to visit the club. Please see our contact details.
Remember: “we are the friendly family sailing venue” and we welcome aspiring sailors to join our club.
